Von Lintel Gallery is proud to announce our first participation in the prestigious ADAA The Art Show at the Park Avenue Armory in New York, opening to the public November 3rd through November 6th, presenting Three Radically Different Approaches to Photography in Booth C-11.
The Von Lintel Gallery booth at The Art Show is centered around the idea of presenting three radically different approaches to photography. Each of these three artists, Floris Neusüss, Joni Sternbach, and Christiane Feser, work with photography in a different way, thereby dispelling the notion of the photographic image as an objective representation of reality. This notion that photography is objective and easily reproducible is commonplace in today’s digital, networked world, but these artists dispute this by creating incredible and unique work, each utilizing their own techniques and processes.
Floris Neusüss
Floris Neusüss is a German artist who has become a leader in experimental photography and has been working with the cameraless technique of photograms since the 1960’s. At the beginning of working with photograms, he would expose full scale, naked female bodies directly on black and white photo paper and they would leave imprints behind; these were termed ‘Nudograms’ by a curator. He later expanded this practice to include color photo paper Nudograms. For a different series in the late 1970’s, Neusüss brought the photogram out of the darkroom and studio to record plant motifs outside, with the same cameraless process. He placed photo-sensitive paper in his garden at night, leaving any ambient light to develop the image. These works capture chaotic scenes of flora, fauna and other figures during a storm.

Joni Sternbach
Joni Sternbach is an American photographer best known for her series entitled “Surfland”. This body of Joni Sternbach’s work is comprised of tintype photographs of surfers and their boards, from coasts all over the world. A tintype is a wet plate process that dates back to the 1850s, it’s a one-of-a-kind, nearly instant photograph that Sternbach develops right there on the beaches where she takes the images. Due to the difficulty and impracticality of this photography method, Sternbach is regarded as a master of this analog process. This photography method lends itself to the nostalgic feeling of this body of work, and the streaks and tonal variations in the final photographs reflect the laborious, hand-made character of the pieces. This series echoes traditions of anthropological photography while highlighting the culture of modern day surfing; it is about the relationship between the surfer and the board, human and landscape, photographer and subject.

Christiane Feser
Christiane Feser approaches photography like no other, as she makes a three dimensional sculptural object, photographs it, then prints two copies of the same photograph and cannibalizes one of them to add three dimensionality back to the original flat photograph, using techniques such as cutting, folding, puncturing or adding material. While it is a rather complex process to explain, it produces exceptionally unique pieces which go far beyond pushing the shutter release button to take a picture. Due to the constant changes of material to photograph back to material within this show, the audience is confronted with questions: What am I looking at? What is physical and what is a reproduction?
